Tenant Issues After a Disaster

Abstract

This brochure explains what to do if your rental home is damaged or destroyed by a disaster. In Florida, if only part of your home is damaged, your rent may be lowered. If it is completely destroyed, you can end your lease and move out. You must notify your landlord in writing about any rent changes or lease cancellations. Always take pictures before and after a storm to show damage. If your personal property is damaged, file a claim with your renter’s insurance or apply for FEMA assistance. Landlords must maintain the building, and tenants must report damage. If a landlord tries to evict you illegally, they must follow the proper legal process.
